Penn State’s Center for Nanoscale Science invested multiple efforts to deepen and broaden connections the faculty and students of its PREM Partners, California State University Los Angeles (Cal State LA) and North Carolina State University. The natural evolution and growth of these partnerships requires ongoing attention, consistent contact, flexibility, trust, communication and innovation. New PREM faculty have become involved; previous research projects reached a state of conclusion or generated new questions; and novel ideas are being considered for potential pursuit. In response to each situation, a process of exploration takes place, and while fostering collaborations with current MRSEC faculty membership is the ideal primary effort, supporting the unique research interests of PREM faculty is the higher priority.  As such, the MRSEC utilizes its connections across the entire Penn State materials community to help identify potential collaborators who share mutual research interests.  As liaisons, education staff serve a critical communication and relationship building role in the process, especially when student involvement (summer and academic year visits) and user facility staff engagement is part of the research plan. As the inaugural grant with both partners comes to a close, it is exciting to see that a solid foundation has been laid with each partner, and they are already being utilized to explore and develop future synergies.
